Car Locksmith in Dallas: Lost Key, Dead Fob, or No Start? What to Check First
You are in a Dallas parking lot with a car that will not do what it did this morning. Sometimes every key is gone. Sometimes the fob is in your hand and the engine still will not turn over. Sometimes the lock buttons work and the start button does nothing.
A car locksmith job depends on which of those it is. Sorting that out first saves you from paying for a new fob when a battery, a spare, or a different fault is the real issue.
Three car-key problems that are not the same job
Every key is gone
Nobody can bring you a spare, and the car is sitting wherever you left it. On most newer cars and trucks, a replacement key gets cut first and then programmed to the car. The new key has to match the immobilizer, not just the door. Our car key replacement page is the service writeup. If the keys are inside the car and all you need is the door opened, use the car lockout guide instead. This page stays on keys, fobs, and cars that will not start.
The fob is in your hand and it quit
Try a new coin-cell battery before you assume the fob is dead. If the metal backup key still turns the door but the car will not start, say that when you call. A battery swap and a replacement fob are different work. Buttons that unlock the doors while the car refuses to start point at the start system, not at a lock.
The car will not start, and you still have a key
A key that turns, or a fob the car used to accept, can still fail the immobilizer. Some of those are a programming job. Some need a dealer-level tool or a part we do not carry. We say which one it is before we start. Our automotive locksmith page covers the wider car work.
What to check before you pay for a new key
- Put a fresh battery in the fob if you can open it. A weak cell mimics a dead remote.
- Check for a spare first. A key in a kitchen drawer, at the office, or with a family member nearby still counts. One working key makes programming simpler on many cars.
- Write down the year, make, and model. A push-button start and an older keyed ignition are not programmed the same way.
- Notice what still works. Doors lock from the fob, the blade opens the door, the dash lights up, or nothing responds at all.
A small metal blade hidden in a fob will open the door on many cars. It will not start a car that requires a programmed key. Do not order a whole new fob until you know which of those you need.
What we do at the car
For many makes we cut the key and program it at the vehicle, so the car does not need a tow for a straightforward lost-key or add-a-key job. The same visit can pair fob buttons when the remote is the part that failed. If the car needs a dealer tool, a module, or a part we do not stock, we tell you that before any work starts.
Mobile locksmith service comes to the lot, the driveway, or the curb. Bring photo ID and proof you own the car or are allowed to drive it: registration, title, or insurance. Papers locked in the glovebox are fine. Mention it when you call, and we check them once the door is open.
What to have ready
- Year, make, and model.
- Whether every key is gone, one spare still works, or the fob is in your hand.
- What still responds: locks, dash, or nothing.
- Photo ID, plus proof you may use the vehicle.
- The spot: lot name, garage level, or a cross street in Dallas.

Short answers before you pay for a fob you might not need.
Can you make a key if I lost every copy?
Often, yes, for many makes, cut and programmed at the car. Have the year, make, and model, plus ID and proof you may use the vehicle. A few cars need a dealer tool. We say so before we start.
The fob unlocks the doors but the car will not start. Is that a battery?
Maybe. A weak battery is the cheap check. If a new cell changes nothing, the immobilizer or the start button may be the fault. Tell us exactly what still works.
Do I have to tow the car to a dealer?
Not for a lot of lost-key and spare-key jobs. We come to the car. When a dealer path is the honest one, we say that before tools come out.
What does a Dallas car key job cost?
Key price comes down to the car, whether it takes a chip key or a smart fob, and where it is sitting. You get the number on the phone, and the work waits for your yes.
Can you add a spare fob if I still have one working key?
On many vehicles, yes, and it is a simpler program than starting from zero keys. Bring the working key, the year, make, and model, and your ID.
